“Joanna, would you like to interview Jacques Morin?” asked my friend Damien on the phone.

Damien is a documentary director. I saw the DVD about Jacques Salomé (a great psychologist and a best selling author in France) that Damien and Jacques did together so I was eager to meet him.

The meeting was on the set of their new documentary in beautiful Place des Vosges in the heart of Paris.

So here is Jacques Morin’s vision of happiness:

Happiness urgently needed

Today I went to the library to buy a book and I came back with five!

I went by the personal development section and discovered loads of books about happiness. It surprised me because I never realized there was so much literature on happiness.
You have to know that here, in France, people can be very cynical about happiness. Happiness is for fools or it’s a sect’s slogan. When you surf the web, most of the people writing, talking about happiness are Australian or American (it seems)(well I don’t speak Tamoul or Chinese).

But lately my beliefs are shaken. Everywhere I go, the topic comes up. Just this week, I was helping a friend at a festival and happiness was on everybody’s lips at conferences. Then a couple of days later, I was at a red light on my bike, and just there was a friend eating at a terrasse. I joined him for half an hour, only to discover that he was organizing happiness diners. They invite specialists on the subject like Ruut Veenhoven director of the World Database of Happiness and editor of the Journal of Happiness Studies and discuss.

I was in shock. A happiness tribe!

Since there is prolific information on the web about happiness (see my blogroll for exemple), I could contribute better by investigating what French have to bring to the table. I have a few people in mind and I hope that even if France is the world champion antidepressant consumer, it has the capacity to produce great happiness thinkers. To be continued…

In the meantime, he is not talking directly about happiness but he is French and I see an evident link between how we treat our planet and the fundamentals of happiness. As I exposed in a former post, when you start to investigate the subject of happiness, more stuff (when basics needs are met) is not doing the trick. Happiness doesn’t lie in having more, wasting, war, exploitation… Once every man will discover his inner happiness, the need to destroy our environment will not be the logics anymore. Well that’s what I believe but It seems I am an utopist ☺

So don’t miss this sublime movie that has been released for free in several languages for us to team up and improve the life of each one of us.

about again

My name is Joanna.

I was born in Saint Cloud. It was white and soft and a good way to travel. So I went all over the world.

I was an intern in Singapore, a student in South-Korea, a waitress in Hong Kong. I picked apples in New Zealand, worked in a boat factory in Malaysia. I traveled on a rooftop in Laos. I was a Gambi in California, found a maya vase in Guatemala. I’ve been a receptionist in Casablanca, a teacher in Senegal. I was paid to buy in New-Jersey and Netherlands, consultant in Leamington-Spa, volunteer in an orphanage in Thailand. I was taught cricket rules in Pakistan and lost my virginity in India! But shhh never told anyone.

One day I felt I had seen enough so I came back to my home country: France. I live in Paris now. One of the key to happiness is to have meaning, to have a goal and I found mine. My mission: raise the happiness level on the planet.

First step: let’s check out where we stand on the happiness scale. You, your friends, your workplace, your neighborhood, your country, are you surrounded by happy people?

Dare to follow me but don’t forget, I live on a cloud :)

Because my smiles are also coming from the more serious part of my life. Let me tell you about the more serious part of myself. I am a buyer. No, not a shopper ! A Buyer. A purchaser. Professional. Yes. I even have a master degree in purchasing. What is a purchaser ! Do your homework ☺

I was a buyer and quality manager in a Small company in the center of France. A city of 30.000 where the time is slower, where you have to carry your own light to see. I owe to the people of this company my confidence. The impact of your work on such a Small company is quickly visible. It is very encouraging and it gives a clear vision of your work’s yield. With the full support of an encouraging director, I got the chance to visit the tanneries of Calcutta, to punch my hand on the table, in the middle of a negociation round in Faisalabad, to cheer every 5 minutes at a meal with 8 chinese people. Each discovery about the job was yield for the company. It’s a great sensation.

My second job, I was a buyer of labels in Parsippany, New Jersey. I was so lucky, I had the best boss possible for me. He was custom-made. Freedom, protection from part of the pressure of the company and faith. Thanks to this perfect mix, I was able to enjoy myself at finding solutions that fitted the company’s needs.  And the magic’s worked again. To be frank, I was surprised. And then I was proud. But, this, you must have felt already? ☺

My third job, I was a Global purchaser for a dutch company. I learned that you shouldn’t go for the glamlights. (I am not even sure that word exists.) I enjoyed being the last in the class. Bad grades all the way. Not able to work with my manager. Irreverence. I met people I loved working with, loved the city of Amsterdam, had good relationships with my suppliers but just didn’t fit in. Resolved mainly “in time to market” situations. Was devastated with my very average capacity at understanding business law.  I lost my way there.

My fourth job. I was a consultant for a british company. Great team of people and a very good school to the british management style that I really enjoyed. I was assigned to different project and my role went from data crunching to setting up Boost-Juice chain in the UK. I became better at managing my expectations and my boss ;) I learned also a bit about customer relationship as I handled alone, at the start, the Boost Juice account. I met the founder of the chain, and was very inspired by her listening skills. What a great woman! She listens, smiles, shares. I wish I could give as much energy as this woman gives others.

That leads me to entrepreneurship.  I am on a travel to create my own company. But the roads are not drawn yet so I follow my instincts and life always teaches me something new.  I forget fear of failure, social status and nice apartments. I plant the seeds of the next season and I enjoy the growing season.

Spread The Happyness

Happyview*2: Carpool France

by Joanna on 29/01/2009

map carpool

To go to one of my favorite places in the world, I used for the first time carpooling. I love to decide things last minute but the drawback is cost. The yield management used by transport companies makes it a luxury. But I found a transport company that has no yield policy : carpooling.

I used this site to find my ride and everything went smoothly. It was even a great experience. My fellow carpoolers were Nicolas, volcanologist, Guillaume, sound engineer and Caroline, teacher. I was in a Small car, my chin on my bag but I enjoyed so much the conversation that time flew. We talked, talked, talked and all started with the word happiness.

I will try to interview people only in English from now on. I am just not so much into translation and subtitles. You could also call it laziness ☺

The beginning of my quest for what makes people happy is marked by the end of a 6 month program in a business incubator. I found out that entrepreneurs look happier than the average. They are pursuing goals that seem to help them go through difficulties.

First Happyview, let’s find out what makes entrepreneurs within Advancia incubator happy.

What makes me happy after doing the video montage are the credits at the end :)
